Bridge

History of the Bridge Club

Bridge has been played in Milltown since our foundation, where impromptu and organized games of Rubber Bridge were regular occurrences, especially on Saturdays and Wednesdays. They were managed by Frank Twanley from the early 1950s.

There were many private games of rubber amongst Milltown members, which rotated from home to home throughout the winter. Getting into one of these schools was very difficult and rejection was a life knocking experience. A famous school with W. Grant. R. Cuddy, S. Egan, H. Counihan, M. Winston, JB Carr, J Barry was played every Thursday throughout the winter between the 1960s and 1990s, breaking in the summer to pay more attention to golf.

In more recent years as the game increased in popularity in Ireland, it made far better sense to establish a formal Bridge Section in Milltown to enjoy the duplicate experience. This was conceived and established in 1960 by Dr. Coyne and Mrs A.J. O’Kelly and the committee.

Bridge Club Nights

The main bridge club night is Tuesday, with Thursday secondary, both attracting 20 plus tables per night (80 people). In the mid Sixties, Edgar Roy initiated a Wednesday afternoon section which operated through the winter months and still does to this day. This is also very well supported with 20 plus tables a regularity.

The Molly Fox Inter Golf Club Trophy

The standard of play in Milltown is reflected by the fact that the club has won the Molly Fox Inter Golf Club Trophy many times since its inception in the mid 1950s and more times than any other club. The first Milltown winners were Peter Pigot snr, Peter Fitzgerald, John Duffy and Claire Lyne in 1962.
